victims of super storm sandy. the volunteers got on buses at city hall and went to some of the hardest hit areas like staten island. they are sorting goods, checking on residents, delivering supplies. there are 36 diaster recovery centers in new york city with more to come. >>> while things are improving nearly two weeks after the storm, there are plenty of people who still do not have power. fox's peter doocey has more on why some are running out of patience. >> reporter: almost two weeks after super storm sandy passed through, some people are still without company. the largest company on long island, lipa now being blamed for poor preparation. >> i don't believe what they did was adequate. i don't believe it was right. part of it is the system design and part of it is just their performance and the fact that these utilities are a monopoly. >> reporter: government-owned lipa asked other utility companies for 700 workers to help them restore power but they ended needing 10,000. the companies that lipo contracted to help them clean up the mess said they are doing extremely well. >> we are p

. >> reporter: this coastal new jersey community took a direct hit from sandy. saturday almost two weeks after the storm, many people got their first look at the damage. >> this is not my boat. >> reporter: john boil found a boat in his backyard. his 7-year-old vacation home filled with four feet of water. >> it's been through a few storms but this is absolutely the worst. >> reporter: in new york. >> we put in 12 packs in a bag. >> reporter: volunteers like sofia and her daughter fanned out across the city to assist people still struggling. >> they lost a lot of their stuff and their homes right next to the beach. they had a dance and some of us didn't make it through the dance and we're here to give them what they need. >> reporter: volunteers are working to distribute those essentials like blankets, water and diapers. all of these supplies have been donated. but some say help came too late. >> this has only been maybe a week and a half of, you know, fresh water, but for the first 5 or 6 days, no one was there. >> reporter: frustration is especially high on long island. where some of the 130

. >> it has been three weeks after hurricane sandy and still, no power for a lot of those folks. frustrations are growing. people in parts of new jersey also without power right now. meanwhile, paramedics fanned out across the rockaways section of new york city, checking in on the elderly and the disabled, anyone who might need help. people in the area say help has been slow. >> this has only been maybe a week and a half of, you know, freshwater. for the first five to six days, no one was down in the rockaways. >> new york city officials have reported at least two elderly people have died in buildings without power. >>> it has been two years in the making. dozens helped break ground for a vietnam war memorial in san jose. the monument, called sons of san jose, is going to be in a five-acre area of guadalupe river park. organizers say more than 140 san jose residents died or went missing in the vietnam war. a memorial in san jose means people don't have to go to washington, dc to pay their respects to the fallen. that project is expected to be complete in about 10 weeks. ♪ >>> in honor of ve
